The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call
on him in truth.
Psalm 145:18
Why should I pray
Whatever is on your mind matters to God, because you matter to Him.
What should I pray
As you develop the discipline of praying, over time you will gain a sense of what God is talking to you about and what His Will is for your life. In the beginning, try not to get hung up on what you are praying, for it is more important to understand WHO you are praying to—OUR CREATOR!
Jesus set the perfect example of the importance of prayer.
Although His days were filled from morning to night with many pressures and responsibilities -- addressing crowds, healing the sick, granting private interviews, traveling, and training His disciples -- He demonstrated that prayer was His connection to the Power of God His Father. If Jesus was so dependent upon His fellowship in prayer with His Father, how much more you and I should spend time with God, in prayer.
Preparing yourself
Silence your phone or devices as needed
Breath—Practice slowing down your mind, your breathing; focus on this moment.
Posture—Sit, kneel, position yourself so you are comfortable.
Sound—You can use calming instrumental music, nature sounds (ocean, birds etc.)
Listen—God our Father desires to meet you where you are. Be prepared to hear from our Lord, and His Holy Spirit will speak.
Sight— Feel free to dim lights, add a candle or create a space to be calming and open to the Holy Spirit.
Journal—If you would like, writing in a journal can be helpful. Having a bible nearby is also suggested.
Creating space for prayer time— A favorite chair by a sunny window, a quiet room in your home (where you won't be interrupted). It is even suggested to create a prayer closet of your very own. Be creative! If none of those work, Norwood Baptist Church RI has created a prayer room for your use. For more information on where and how to use the NBCRI prayer room, please contact the church office at 941-7040.
Be in prayer with others
Join the Norwood Baptist Church RI prayer team once a month for an evening of prayer. Everyone is invited. You can choose to participate or just sit and welcome the Holy Spirit into your heart.
Once a month, prayer services are held on the third Wednesday of each month within the sanctuary. The next few services are as scheduled: September 20th, and October 18th. All begin at 6:30 pm.
Should you have any questions or would like more information/guidance on how to begin your journey into a prayerful life, please fill in the form below and either Lisa Silvia or Sue Carpenter will reach out to you.
